MDIF&W: Free Snowmobile Weekend Slated for January 31-February 2

Snowmobilers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont will have a chance to get outside their own state and discover new trails for free during the Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend that will take place Jan. 31 thru February 2, 2014. This open weekend allows all legally registered Maine snowmobiles to be operated in New Hampshire and Vermont without being registered in those states.

It also means that all snowmobiles legally registered in New Hampshire and Vermont can be operated in Maine without a current Maine registration. Snowmobilers can explore more than 14,000 miles of Maine’s interconnected, groomed and marked trails.

The Maine Warden Service reminds snowmobilers to ride with caution at all times.

Quitting Tobacco?

If you’re thinking about quitting tobacco or have tried unsuccessfully to stay tobacco free in the past, the New Year might be the right time for you to try again. Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) invites tobacco users to “Take the Next Step” in becoming tobacco free in 2014.

“Take the Next Step” is a 4-week program to help people who are thinking about stopping their use of tobacco. The goal is to help prepare for the next step with tools and a plan to be successful at each person’s own pace.

The 4-week class will begin on January 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm and meet once a week until February 12 at the SVH Administration Offices on 130 Leighton Street in Pittsfield. The cost of the program is $20.

To pre-register or for more information, contact SVH Community Health and Wellness Education Coordinator Laurie Alexander (ext. 2731) at 487.3890.

“Newbees” buzzing over Bee Whisperer’s Beekeeping Classes

“Newbees” buzzing over Bee Whisperer’s Beekeeping Classes

Colony collapse disorder, parasites, pesticides and lack of nectar baring flowers have all contributed to real problems for Maine’s state insect the honeybee and pollinators generally, but a Hampden man, Peter Cowin, AKA The Bee Whisperer, aims to reverse the fortunes of local honeybees.

“There is a growing interest in finding out how to help honeybees and what’s involved in keeping your own honeybee hives” says Cowin. “While commercial beekeepers have struggled with these issues, hobbyists who can give their bees that little extra attention are successfully rearing bees on farms, in back yards, even on roof tops! The key is learning more about bees: where to locate your hives and what equipment, treatments and methods work best locally.”
