Prediabetes: See It as an Opportunity

Prediabetes: See It as an Opportunity

If you've been diagnosed with prediabetes, it means your blood sugar is higher than it should be, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. It's not inevitable that you'll eventually develop diabetes, but it increases your risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one-third of the adults in this country have prediabetes. Most of them have no idea.

Celebrating Our Veterans and a 100th Birthday

Burton Curtis turned 100 years old November 11, 2014 — Veterans Day. A World War II veteran, he says he joined the United States Air Force because his country was in trouble and he needed to do something. What he did was became a glider pilot who carried out dangerous missions during the war. He went on to serve 30 years in the Air Force, retiring as Colonel Burton Curtis.

Community Health Fair

Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) will host its annual Community Health Fair on Saturday, October 18th, from 9 am to noon at Maine Central Institute’s Wright Gym in Pittsfield. With the theme of “Celebrating Traditions of Care,” this year’s fair will also host the 20th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Admission to both events is free.

Returning to the larger Wright Gym (where both the walk and the fair were held years ago), the Community Health Fair is planning to provide seasonal flu shots for adults at least 18 years old, nutrition education, drug identification, hands-only CPR/Pet CPR instruction, senior resources, health screenings, and local health services offered throughout the community. Every year, the SVH Breast Cancer Awareness Walk raises money for the Nancy Stone Fund, which provides free mammograms and other breast health services to area women who cannot afford these services because of a lack of insurance or underinsurance.

SVH Announces Autumn Art on Display

SVH Announces Autumn Art on Display

Members of Valley Arts Alliance hung the fourth installation of seasonal paintings in the hospital lobby areas at Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) in Pittsfield recently. In partnership with Valley Arts Alliance, which is a group of over thirty artists and supporters of the arts in the Sebasticook Valley region, the hospital hosts a rotating art exhibit for public viewing.

What began in January, the exhibit features artwork by local artists using the theme of seasons as their guide. SVH President/CEO and EMHS Senior Vice-President Terri Vieira commented, “Our patients and visitors have been interested and look forward to viewing art in our hallways and waiting areas. It’s a privilege to offer opportunities for local artists to showcase their original artwork in our public spaces, and these beautiful prints and paintings infuse color and endearing images that represent our region outside the walls of our community hospital.”
