Mock Disaster Held at Nokomis Regional High School

Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) held a mock disaster on May 30th at Nokomis Regional High in Newport, Maine. Involving various local public safety departments and other organizations, the mock disaster provided a meaningful opportunity to evaluate the various processes involved when responding to dynamic life-threatening events.

SVH Ambulance Services arrived early that morning to apply realistic make-up to the several teens involved in the mock disaster, which involved two vehicles driven by teens, with one driver under the influence of bath salts.

In the mock disaster scenario, the “drugged” driver left her vehicle and attacked the driver of the other vehicle with a knife. SVH Ambulance and Newport Fire Department responded to the accident to provide medical attention to the several students involved in the accident, while Newport Police were on hand to take the enraged driver into custody. Since three passengers were killed in the mock disaster, Crosby Funeral Home was on scene to transport the deceased by hearse. Several seniors witnessed the event.

SVH CEO/EMHS Senior Vice President Terri Vieira commented, “Drills help the hospital staff troubleshoot and prepare for actual critical events that happen infrequently in our community. Our staff enjoyed working with the teenagers, whose energetic personalities and enthusiasm added levity and realism to what could have been a very serious event.”

Accredited by the Joint Commission, SVH comprises a progressive 25-bed critical access hospital with a wide range of outpatient services throughout the region. SVH is a proud member of EMHS. Contact Director of Marketing Jennifer Yarbrough at (207) 487-4024 for more information.
